Mars Lost Excerpt:
As the truck rumbled along there was an occasional jolt when a rock would move under the truck. It drove over the roadless landscape and Robert stared out the window at the barren cold expanse beyond the walls of the truck, and for the first time, he acknowledged where he was. He had seen the dust and rocks, felt the gravity, experienced the suits, and understood that he was on Mars but this was the first time he was conscious of the fact.
“This is Mars…” he said as his voice trailed off whispering only to himself in awe. This is the awe that comes over a man seeing such arid beauty for the first time. Like watching the sun rise over the Mojave desert, except this terrain was completely devoid of all visible life, except for what was inside the cab of that truck. As the feelings of distance and confusion faded, some realization that he was so far from home finally sunk in. Tears began to form in the corners of his eyes, choking back his tightening throat. He wanted to ask so many questions, but he could barely focus on anything other than the one that mattered most to him. Where was his family?
